What items are FSA and HSA eligible?
Most out-of-pocket medical expenses the IRS recognizes as qualified medical care are eligible — prescription eyeglasses and contacts, dental cleanings and orthodontics, over-the-counter medication, first aid supplies, sunscreen, menstrual products, blood pressure and glucose monitors, and more. Type an item above or browse the full list below.
What's the difference between FSA-eligible and HSA-eligible?
The two lists overlap almost completely. The exceptions are new for 2026: gym memberships and Direct Primary Care memberships are HSA eligible only — they are not reimbursable through a Flexible Spending Account.
What is a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN), and when do I need one?
A Letter of Medical Necessity is a note from a licensed provider stating that an otherwise personal-use item — like blue light blocking glasses or a massage gun — is being used to treat a specific medical condition. Items marked “LMN required” below need one on file before a claim gets approved.
Do I need a prescription to buy an FSA/HSA-eligible item?
Only for items marked “Rx required” below, like prescription eyeglasses, contact lenses, and CPAP machines. Most over-the-counter medication and first aid supplies need no prescription — that requirement was dropped by the CARES Act in 2020.
Can I use my FSA money before it expires?
Yes — spend it on anything on this list before your plan year's deadline or grace period ends. Type an item above for an instant answer, or email yourself the full checklist so you don't forget what still qualifies.
